Mr. Don and Mrs. Dawn Gordon were both recipients of our Meals on Wheels service. Sadly, Mr. Gordon passed away in August, leaving Dawn, who lives with Alzheimer’s disease, on her own. Following Don’s passing, it became clear that Dawn was struggling with her meals. She shared that the portions were too large and difficult to manage. In response, we trialed a new approach: splitting her main meal into two smaller containers and ensuring the food was soft and easy to eat.
This simple adjustment made a meaningful difference. Dawn’s daughter, Denise, phoned to say the change had worked. We further refined the offering by replacing soups with side salads, which Dawn found easier to enjoy.
Initially receiving two meals per week (equating to four containers), Dawn’s service was recently increased to three meals per wee, now totaling six containers. This tailored support has continued successfully, with no further changes needed.
This story highlights how small, thoughtful adjustments can have a big impactensuring dignity, independence, and nourishment for those we serve.
