After a long wait, Craig received the keys to his new KIA Seltos from Ken Mills Toyota in Kingaroy on Friday, 6 December 2024. This milestone marked the fulfilment of a goal Craig set when he first accessed the NDIS in 2020, to become as independent as possible. With support from South Burnett Care, Craig travelled to Bundaberg for six months of specialist disability driving lessons in a hand-modified Suzuki Swift. On the final day, Craig earned his driver’s licence on his first attempt, achieving a perfect score. Before leaving Bundaberg, Craig promised his instructor, Dave, that he’d return to show him the car once he had one. In June 2025, accompanied by a support worker, Craig fulfilled that promise.

Dave, surprised and touched, said that in 19 years of teaching over 2,000 students, Craig was the only one who had ever returned after getting their licence. Craig purchased the vehicle independently, with NDIS funding supporting the modifications. South Burnett Care’s assistance was vital in helping Craig reach this goal, enabling him to attend places and events without relying on family or friends, a major step toward true independence.
